Ernest Hemingway

 Why doesn’t Frederic visit the priest’s family?  Book Two  Contrast the previous romantic relationships Catherine and Frederic have had.

 This section of the novel is considered one of the most powerful examples of war writing.  Hemingway’s journalistic background helps him to write with detailed accuracy.  Historically, the town of Caponetto was the scene of one of the biggest retreats of WWI, representing a huge military disaster for Italy and the Allies.

 The description builds to a crescendo of lost discipline, confusion, and anarchy of which Frederic cannot be a part.  It is his “farewell to arms.” How does Frederic conduct himself during this time? What do the teenage girls represent? Read the poems on your handout and complete the questions.

 The dialogue is not as stilted.  Identify two reasons Count Greffi is memorable.  Frederic tries to articulate his beliefs.  In chapter 34, find the passage which begins, “That night at the hotel, in our room…”  What are his ideas regarding love, life, and loneliness.
