Agenda 1)Welcome and Introductions – Lisa Taylor, HC SIG Vice Chair 2) Updates from HC SIG Leadership 3) Updates on SIG programs – Debbie Brown 4)Panel Discussion - Onboarding Best Practices in Federal Agencies Session Description "Onboarding" is the current term for new-employee orientation. Onboarding isn’t an event, it’s a process. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) defines onboarding as "the process by which new hires get adjusted to the social and performance aspects of their jobs quickly and smoothly, and learn the attitudes, knowledge, skills, and behaviors required to function effectively within an organization." One of the important ways that HR can impact the workforce and effectiveness of organizations is through the strategic use of onboarding, even before the new hire starts their first day. While all employees experience some type of onboarding, research shows that organizations considered “best in class” for onboarding have a structured, comprehensive approach that helps employees acclimate to their new jobs and become productive more quickly. The bottom line is that to the degree that organizations can make new hires feel welcomed into the organization and prepared for their new jobs, the faster they will be able to successfully contribute to the organization’s mission. It may also improve loyalty and retention. Session Participants Ventris C. Gibson, Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary and CHCO, Office of Human Resources, U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services Ventris C.
