Starter Consider the climate  Climate is the long-term, widespread weather. There are 3 true statements about climate in the list below. Place an X next.
 Each Mass is described with a Temperature & Moisture  Ex: Hot / Dry  Ex: Cold / Moist.

 Meteorology  The science of weather.  Climate  How we describe the patterns of weather conditions over a long term.
What’s the Difference?. Climate or Weather?  Weather is the daily conditions of the atmosphere.  Weather changes day to day.  Weather = one day  Example:

What is Climate? Climate is weather patterns over time and space (usually 30 years) Remember….weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular.

WHAT CAUSES CLIMATE.  Weather refers to the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.  Climate refers to the average, year to year.
2 nd Theme of Geography: Place PLACE = What you find at a particular location. BOTH Physical Characteristics & Human Characteristics CLIMATE.
Depending on where you are on Earth, the climate can be very, very different. Make a list of things that you believe affect the climate in a certain area.

Climate

On page 17 of your Interactive Notebook: Divide the page into two sections. On the top section, draw either a tropical rain forest or a desert. On the bottom section, draw either a rainy day or a sunny day in your neighborhood in Maryland. Use the color pencils. Be sure to use your bin. Give your page an appropriate title and add it to your table of contents.

Title page 18, “Climate versus Weather Title page 18, “Climate versus Weather.” Copy the following definitions: Climate--average, year-after-year conditions of temperature, precipitation, winds, and clouds in an area. Weather--the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time.

Examine the following data: Baltimore, MD July 19, 2010 Forecast: Cloudy 94 F Feels like 98 F 0.1 in precipitation Phoenix, AZ July 19, 2010 Forecast: Mostly cloudy 96 F Feels like 95 F 0.0 in precipitation

Even though Baltimore and Phoenix have similar weather for this particular day, do Baltimore and Phoenix have similar climates?

Where are Phoenix and Baltimore?

Look at your two drawings… Which drawing represents weather? Which drawing represents climate? Label the drawing that represents weather and the drawing that represents climate. Write a description of your drawing over each drawing.

Look at the following pictures.

Why do you think they look so different?

Does one place look colder than another?

Does one place look wetter than the others?

Copy the following sentence on page 18 Copy the following sentence on page 18. Underline the words that describe weather and circle the words that describe climate: It is sunny and 80 Fahrenheit. It’s really strange. It’s usually rainy and cold, like 50 this time of year.

Today’s objective: You should be able to identify and describe factors affecting temperature and precipitation in order to determine climate of a region In other words, we will be learning why some places get more rain, some places less; why some places are warmer than others…in order to determine the region’s climate.

Which one gets the most rain?: B. C. D.

Which one gets the most sun?: A. B. C. D.

Go back to the reading and highlight or underline. Latitude The sentence that explains how it affects temperature. Do the same for Altitude Distance from large bodies of water Ocean currents

Go back to the reading and highlight or underline Prevailing winds How prevailing winds affect precipitation Do the same for Mountain range

On page 19 of your interactive notebook title it “Climate Graphic Organizer” Draw a graphic organizer that shows the factors affecting precipitation and factors affecting temperature in a region. Go to flipchart

Summarize Climate is _____? Weather is _____? Two things determine the climate of a region: ________ and _________.

Exit Ticket: Think. Pair. Share. Write. The 2010 Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver, British Columbia. During the games several events were postponed due to heavy rains and fog. Determine why these conditions were not a factor during the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Accessed at: www.eduplace.com Houghton-Mifflin Company Yakima, WA Phoenix, AZ Mt. St. Helen’s, WA Vancouver, BC Salt Lake City, UT Baltimore, MD Mountain Range

Use the reading “Climate Control” to complete the graphic organizer “Factors that affect climate” for Homework. What are the four factors that affect temperature? What are the two factors that affect precipitation? What happens to the temperature when you get further from the equator? What happens to the temperature when you go higher in the air? Why does one side of a mountain get less rain than the other? Why is it cooler at the beach in the summer? A warm ocean current brings what kind of air?

Paste the “Climate Control” reading on page 20
