5.5 Applications of Mean, Median and Mode Mme DiMarco

 Learning Goal: In today’s lesson, we will learn how to understand which measure of central tendency best describes a set of data Learning Goal

 Mean, median and mode are all measures of central tendency  Each measure is an average of the data presented What are measures of central tendency???

 A bookstore has 15 books in its Young Adult section. There are 5 different prices. This table shows the number of books at each price. a)Find the mean, median and mode prices a)Which measure best represents the average price of a young adult book? a)What is the range of the prices? Example

a)Find the mean, median and mode prices Mean Price: Step 1: Multiply each price by the total number of books at that price, then add the prices (8.99 x 3) + (9.99 x 5) + (13.99 x 5) + (32.99 x 1) + (37.99 x 1) = Step 2 : Divide the total price by the total number of books to find the average price ÷ 15 = The mean (average) price per book is $14.52 Solution Young Adult Books Price ($) Number of Books $8.993 $9.995 $ $ $37.991

a)Find the mean, median and mode prices Median Price: Step 1: Find out how many books there are in total There are 15 books, an odd number. Therefore the median price will be the 8 th price in the order. Step 2: Find the 8 th price. We know that the 8 th book is $9.99 from out chart, therefore the median price is $9.99 Solution Young Adult Books Price ($) Number of Books $8.993 $9.995 $ $ $37.991

a)Find the mean, median and mode prices Mode Price: Step 1: Find out which prices repeat most frequently at the book store The prices that repeat are $9.99 and $13.99 The mode prices are $9.99 and $13.99 Solution Young Adult Books Price ($) Number of Books $8.993 $9.995 $ $ $37.991

b)Which measure best represents the average price of a young adult book?  The mean price is not charged for any of the books.  Only 2 books are more than the mean of $14.52  There are two mode prices, $9.99 and $  One mode, $9.99, is the same as the median price.  One half of the books cost more than the median, and one half cost less Therefore the median price, $9.99, best represents the average cost of a young adult book at the store Solution Young Adult Books Price ($) Number of Books $8.993 $9.995 $ $ $37.991

c)What is the range of the prices? To find the range, subtract the lowest price from the highest price: = The range of prices is $29.00 Solution Young Adult Books Price ($) Number of Books $8.993 $9.995 $ $ $37.991
