Difficulties We Met …… However, there is a new regulation in Taiwan that the mountain area above 1500 m was assigned as protected area and only limit buildings are allowed. Astronomical observatory was not included. Thank to assistant from Chairman Wang of Legislative Yuan to coordinate government ministries, astronomical observatory was finally put into the list in late The building permit was issued on 11/15/2008 from Chiyi county government. A local company won the contract for the building and was ready to start the construction in May 2009 …… 2016/1/ 兩岸天文儀器會議

Difficulties We Met …… In May 2009, Environment Protection Administration (EPA) informed us the construction must be suspended because the 2M building is located inside an animal protection area. – Environmental impact assessment must be done in advanced. – In this animal protection area, four season’s animal inspection is essential. – The building permit was invalid – The building contract had to be rescinded Environmental impact assessment was made from Oct 2009 to Nov 2010 and the report was approved by EPA in March The new budget was set and the construction will be started soon. 2016/1/ 兩岸天文儀器會議

Instrument 2016/1/ 兩岸天文儀器會議

Instrument The first generation instrument for 2M telescope is the Simultaneous Multi-color Imager. This 4-color simultaneous imager consists of – Dichroic mirrors and filters split the light into 4 bands: nm(r), nm(i), nm(z) and nm(y) – higher QE CCD cameras 3 sets of 1100-series cameras were purchased from Spectral Instruments Inc., USA, within E2V back illuminated deep depletion CCDs for r,i,z bands The other one (NCU-Cam1), with within fully depleted CCD from Hamamatsu photonics K.K., Japan. and Polycold cryo-cooler, is developed by NCU instrument team 2016/1/ 兩岸天文儀器會議

Summary The manufacture of telescope has been completed and the telescope has shipped to Taiwan in The environment impact assessment has been completed and the new budget has set. The construction will be started soon/ The 4 cameras, including the one we develop (NCUcam1), and the optical system for the 4-color simultaneous imager have been complete. The integration test cannot be done due to the delay of telescope dome construction. – We are now looking for suitable telescope that allows us to test instrument’s performance, or, furthermore, start scientific observations. 2016/1/ 兩岸天文儀器會議
