The Purpose of Our Singing  Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

The Purpose of Our Singing  Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

“Holy, Holy, Holy” Words: Reginald Heber, 1826 Music: John B. Dykes, 1861

Hymn #1: “Holy, Holy, Holy”  Theme of Lesson- Let us take a closer look at the words in which we sing to God & to one another in this hymn. Hopefully we can gain a greater appreciation for our singing; and be reminded of how we teach & admonish one another when singing spiritual songs.

“Holy, holy, holy”  Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said:“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

“Lord God Almighty”  Revelation 15:3 They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints!”

“Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee”  Psalm 5:1 Give ear to my words, O Lord, Consider my meditation. 2 Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray. 3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.

“Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee”  Psalm 92:1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; 2 To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night,

“Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and Mighty”  Psalm 89:1 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. 2 For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”

“Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and Mighty”  Psalm 136: 1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. 2 Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever. 3 Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever: 4 To Him who alone does great wonders, For His mercy endures forever; 5 To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever;

“Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and Mighty”  Psalm 136: 23 Who remembered us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever; For His mercy endures forever; 24 And rescued us from our enemies, For His mercy endures forever; For His mercy endures forever; 25 Who gives food to all flesh, For His mercy endures forever. For His mercy endures forever. 26 Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever. For His mercy endures forever.

“Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and Mighty”  Luke 1:46 And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. 49 For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. 50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him

“God over all, and blest eternally.”  Psalm 47:5 God has gone up with a shout, The Lord with the sound of a trumpet. 6 Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! 7 For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding.

“Holy, holy, holy, all the saints adore Thee”  Paul refers to members of the church as saints (1Corinthians 1:2)  Adore-To love someone deeply, to love someone intensely.  Matthew 22:37 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

“Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;”  Revelation 4:9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”

“Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;”  Revelation 15:2 And I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and those who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having harps of God. 3 They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb,

“Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee”  Isaiah 6:2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

“Who wert and art and evermore shalt be.”  Revelation 4:8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

“Tho’ the darkness hide Thee, Tho’ the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see”  Exodus 33:20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”

“Tho’ the darkness hide Thee, Tho’ the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see”  1Peter 1:15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”  Revelation 15:4 Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested.”

“All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea;”  Psalm 145:10 All Your works shall praise You, O Lord, And Your saints shall bless You. 11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, And talk of Your power, 12 To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations. 14 The Lord upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all look expectantly to You, And You give them their food in due season.

“All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea;”  Psalm 145:16 You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 The Lord is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works. 18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. 19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them. 20 The Lord preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy. 21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, And all flesh shall bless His holy name, Forever and ever.
