Florida International University Richard T. Schoephoerster Integrating Academia, Clinical Medicine, and the Biomedical Industry Forum on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Biomedical Engineering Education

Course Title (1): Clinical Rotations for BME Purpose –Introduction to the end-user of medical device development –Observation of medical procedures –Forum for interaction and discussion with medical personnel Course description –3 hours/week + 2 procedures individually arranged –Each session: lecture, tour/demonstration, discussion –Student evaluation: attendance, weekly reports, other written assignments

Apply the principles of engineering design from recognition of need to a fully-tested product Organize and manage a design project and work effectively in a team to complete the project Incorporate biocompatibility, regulatory issues, and other considerations and constraints pertinent to medical devices, into the design process Apply knowledge of natural physiological systems to the design of their replacements, and to devise means to overcome constraints in doing so. Course Title (2): Design of Biomedical Systems and Devices

Provides the undergraduate engineering student with the fundamental tools necessary to build a business plan around a technical innovation Developed along parallel paths: –Introduce business fundamentals necessary to plan, and potentially operate, a business The topics covered include: Creativity, Innovation and Intellectual Property; Planning the Venture; Developing a Business Plan; Financing the Venture; and Launching the Venture. –Organize students into E-teams to envision a technology based business concept and develop a business plan to take the concept to a business. Develops the concept, conducts a feasibility study, develops a business plan and makes a final presentation to a panel of judges that include experienced entrepreneurs. Course Title (3): Entrepreneurship for Engineers

How do you measure outcomes? Educational Outcomes: The ability to 1. Use appropriate tools and understand the optimal environment for creative thinking 2. Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team 3. Develop a business plan appropriate for a technology venture 4. Conduct a patent search and write a patent disclosure for novel work 5. Understand the process of obtaining financing for the venture 6. Communicate to a diverse audience in written, oral, and multimedia format 7. Understand the role of marketing to a business venture 8. Organize and manage a project and work effectively in a team to complete the project 9. Integrate technology development with commercialization

Describe a course project or exercise that exemplifies “best practices” Technology Entrepreneurship Competition –“Real world” experience that combines the senior design project with business plan competition –Utilizes E-teams –Prototype required with business plan –Cash prizes –Venture capitalists and entrepreneurs as judges
