National Association for the Education of Young Children

 In 1969, NANE, the National Association of Nursery Educators was founded by Patti Hill and by 1929, the first book was published by NANE titled— Minimum Essentials for Nursery Education.

 In 1964 the NANE was reorganized as the National Association for the Education of Young Children, NAEYC. 

 NAEYC is the world’s largest organization working on behalf of young children with 100,000 members. Since it’s beginning, NAEYC has provided excellent publications and conferences. ○ Journals, books, and other resources that combine a research base and features that are useful for teachers, teacher educators, and policy makers. ○ Conferences provide valuable opportunity for professional development for ECE educators.

 Young Children is one of the journals published by NAEYC. It is visually appealing, interesting to read and focus on important topics of the ECE field. ○ Journal articles are available to read online.

 As the number of women with children entering the workforce increased in the 1970’s, the nation’s educators and parents sought ways to determine what children need and how to provide high quality care for children.  The National Association for the Education of Young Children is the organization that took the lead in identifying quality care indicators for child care.

 NAEYC developed two important quality indicators: 1. Accreditation for Early Childhood Education programs 2. Developmentally Appropriate practice position statement
