Some things have a meaning.. Can you guess what the meaning of these objects is? Do any of these objects have POWER to actually do what they mean? Eg can a medal actually make someone brave?

What are Sacraments ? To define a Sacrament To explain how the Sacraments make God’s life and power real To evaluate whether objects can make God’s life and power present to us When did God miracles through Jesus’ body? Heal through Jesus’ hands? Do miracles through Jesus’ words? If so, could we expect things that represent Jesus also to carry his Holy Spirit?

Jesus did miracles through his hands, his speech, even using mud and his own spittle. Jesus doesn’t walk on earth any more but through special objects and words, said by a priest in a ceremony, God still gives us His power & life – these are the Sacraments. 1. Explain how Jesus did his miracles. 2. What are the Sacraments? Explain and put a box around your definition. **What sort of “objects” do you think might be used by a priest in a Sacrament, to bring God’s power to us?

What are Sacraments ? OBJECTS WORDS CEREMONY POWER&HEALING

Which objects could be used in a Sacrament?

3. – because Jesus made it holy when he went into the water to be baptised by John 1. – because Jesus chose it to be His blood at the Last Supper 4. - because Jesus chose it to be His body at the Last Supper. 5. – because that is how the first apostles passed on the gift of the holy spirit to others 6. – because it is soothing and healing, and it gives strength. Also kings were anointed with it because through it, Jesus won victory over sin and death 1.match & explain why each object is chosen for God to show His power. *Draw the objects! ***Could any bread or water have God’s power or does it have to be part of a ceremony? Laying on of Hands Oil

Some Christians say objects like bread, or water, only remind you about God, but can’t actually make God’s power real What do you think? Objects like water, oil, bread and wine just REMIND us about God. Objects like water, oil, bread and wine actually can bring God’s power and life to us CATHOLICSOTHER CHRISTIANS This bread & wine just reminds us of what Jesus did This bread & wine actually IS Jesus’ body and blood This water is just an image of how we are washed from sin in baptism This water, used in baptism, actually washes sins away and actually makes us to be born into the life of God Jesus in His human body ACTUALLY brought God’s life and power into the world. So if Jesus’ body, by God’s choice, brought God’s life into the world, why can’t other objects ? Don’t believe in Sacraments Believe in Sacraments 1.Compare what Catholics and other Christians believe about whether objects can bring God’s power into the world. Catholics believe that…but other Christians believe that… **Do you think objects used in Church ceremonies actually make God’s life and power real to us, or are they just reminders?

I believe these objects do / do not make God’s life and power real to us because… A Sacrament is a religious ceremony that uses objects with a meaning to make God’s life and power real to us.

Homework Draw a title page with some of the Sacramental objects we have been looking at. Include a definition of what a sacrament is.
