Obsolete and Emergent Technology: Overhead Projecter Vs. LCD Projector A Multimedia Presentation by: Andy Goswick EDUC7108

Obsolete Technology: Overhead Projector Out of Date Hot, gives off heat. Uses Vis-a- markers, messy. Bulky

Emergent Technology: LCD Projector Up to date technology Easy to use Lightweight, portable Small, compact

Obsolete Technology: Overhead Projector Obsoletes: ChalkboardsLecterns Boring ways of presentation Rekindles: Presentation and variety of introduction of content and enhancement. Provides interaction. Reverses: Instrument that allows less mess, allows for teacher to be away from instrument. Observe class effectively. Enhances: Ease of presenting information rather than messy chalk/chalkboards

Emergent Technology: LCD Projector Obsolete: Overhead projector Chalkboards Reverses: Dust from chalkboard Messy pens Less heat from bulb Rekindles: Creativity by both student/teacher More available resources Enhances: Visual Aides Different perspective

Which of the Six Forces are useful in explaining the emergence of overhead projectors? Evolutionary Technologies Rhymes of History Overhead projectors entered into the classroom as an aide for teachers. It helped to cause interaction between both the student and teacher as well as variety of presentation.

Evolutionary Technology LCD Projectors: The level of interaction, portability and ease of use helped the emergence of the LCD projector. Students and teachers are now able to manipulate, present more effective multimedia projects and tap into a ton of resources. Overhead Projectors: As technology changed, the overhead projector became less and less interactive and new technology emerged. This technology would enhance and present new interaction opportunities which would cause the overhead to become obsolete.

Rhymes Of History Overhead Projector: They didn’t allow interaction without the students getting out of their seat. Some thought more interaction would be possible without disturbance of classroom. LCD Projectors: Help remind teachers and students of the variety of resources as well as increased interaction from their desk. This would also allow the teacher more mobility in the classroom.

Disruptive Technology LCD Projector didn’t just appear. It was placed in classrooms after years of being in the business setting. The potential was realized in relation to the educational setting and implementation began. Many did/do not like it because it takes some knowledge of computer skills and technological skill. Even though it’s simple to use, some find it intimidating.

Science Fiction Let’s face it, have you ever seen someone in a movie produce an overhead projector? Overhead Projector are one dimensional in most cases or two at the most. Education and some business settings have limited the overhead. Even though the LCD was used in business settings and became the norm, others began to see the potential in other settings. It’s a multi-dimensional tool which roll portability, ease of use and lightweight all into one. Projection via a computer has allowed resources to become unlimited to the internet.

Increasing Returns Ever since the LCD Projector has come on the scene, the value has decreased, interest increased and compatibility has strengthened. More and more homes are using a LCD projector as home entertainment venues as well as gaming.

Red Queens LCD projectors and especially overhead projectors do not have a healthy relationship. Either you use one or the other and rarely do you use both. They don’t really have a “red queen” relationship simply because there are so many manufactures trying to compete and gain dominance over the market of LCD projectors.

Where do we go from here? What will students be able to do next? Where will technology take us from here, in order to bring about more efficient, effective and interactive instruction? Will LCD’s become more interactive with the students/teachers via wireless or bluetooth?
