ICT-Tools and enablers that make learning more interesting, motivating, stimulating, and meaningful to the children (Salbiah, 2004). For example - computer, laptop, Internet, LCD projector, television, radio etc.

ICT in Malaysian Education In order to support “Vision 2020” the education system has to be transformed. Transforming the educational system will entail changing the culture and practices of Malaysia’s primary and secondary schools, moving away from memory based learning to an education that stimulates thinking, creativity, caters to individual abilities and learning styles, and based on a more equitable access.

ICT encourages new, creative and engaging ways of teaching and learning. Students think that learning in a technology- enhanced setting is more stimulating and student-centred than learning in a traditional classroom (Pedretti & Mayer-Smith, 1998, as cited in Becta, 2003).

Challenges Infrastructure : physical and basic (electricity) Connectivity Technical Support Stability of the system Focus on examination Teachers skill and aptitude (Salbiah, 2003)

Cheating in teaching Education should see ICT as a means, not an end to itself. Technology should not be seen as a “vitamin” whose mere presence in schools can catalyze better educational outcomes. (Salbiah, 2003)

A teacher can raise the levels of students’ attainment when they use ICT to support their teaching of literacy and numeracy, provided that the use of ICT is planned, structured and integrated effectively by the teacher (Moseley et al., 1999, as cited in Higgins, 2004).

ICT: CHEATING IN TEACHING? CHEATING? teachers being lazy to produce tangible materials. ICT replaces the role of a teacher in a classroom. NOT CHEATING? part of students’ life. helps to ease teaching process. more interactive and interesting (appealing to children).

WHY ICT? Motivating to learn Facilitating acquisition of basic skills (Cuban,2002) Bringing in unexplored world into classroom Enhancing ‘Digital Age Literacy’ Brown and Duguid (2000) Functional lit. Information lit. Cultural lit. News Factual texts/articles Online stories Learning about different cultures Travelling around the globe (virtually) Incorporate active learning Videos, cartoons, songs and etc.

The use of ICT has brought a wealth of possibilities to support the teaching and learning process in our Malaysian classroom. Yet, the way ICT is used by teachers is what makes the difference. ( Higgins, 2004)

For guiding us through this learning experience, special thanks to our supportive supervisor; Mr. Mohanakrishnan
