Distance vs. Displacement

Fifty Meters To The Outhouse? Written By Willi Makit Illustrated by Betty Wont

DISTANCE (d) refers to how much ground an object has covered.

Displacement refers to the LENGTH and DIRECTION of a straight line from the INITIAL position to the FINAL position of an object.

Is distance a scalar or vector? (write this question in your notebook.) a. Scalar b. Vector c. Neither d. Both

Is displacement a scalar or vector? (write this question in your notebook.) a. Scalar b. Vector c. Neither d. Both

displacement = Δd = d f – d i f = final position i = initial position

1. A physics student walks 4 meters East, 2 meters South, 4 meters West, and finally 2 meters North. (draw this diagram in your notes)

Distance traveled? a. 6 m b. 12 m c. 0 m d. 4 m

Displacement? a. 6 m b. 12 m c. 0 m d. 4 m

2. On the sketch below, the ship travels from point x past the lighthouse to point z.

1. Draw a dark line representing the DISTANCE the ship travels. 2. Draw a dashed line representing the ship’s DISPLACEMENT. 3. Measure the ship’s distance (cm). 4. Measure the ship’s displacement (cm)

Speed is a scalar quantity: Speed = __Distance__ Time

Velocity is a vector quantity: Velocity = _Displacement_ Time

Check out this football /physics analogy

Give yourself 10 points on your cover page if you understand the difference between displacement and distance and you wrote down the formulas for speed and velocity.
