Psychology Discovering the Brains Mysteries: Machines that can see into your brain.

Objectives Compare and contrast the EEG, CT scan, MRI, and PET scan.

Bell Work Create a chart comparing and contrasting the EEG, CT scan, MRI, and PET scan.  What does it stand for?  When is it used?  What makes it special?

Introduction How do psychologists discover the mysteries of the brain?

Today, we have... EEG Microelectrode CT Scan MRI PET Scan fMRI

EEG Created by Hans Berger in 1924 Records the electrical activity in the brain

EEG—3 Types of Waves Beta Wave Alpha Wave Delta Wave

EEG—Problem! Can’t identify activity in neurons.

Microelectrode What is it? Used to identify the purpose of single cells

CT Scan Computerized axial tomography Creates a cross-sectional image of the brain Allows you to see deformities or tumors

MRI Everything a CT Scan can do without the harmful x-rays Can be used to find abnormalities in the CNS. Problem: Can’t reveal what the brain is doing.

PET Scan Captures images of both brain structures and their functions  Detects changes in about a minute

fMRI Provides images for both brain structure and brain activity Requires no injections of radioactive material Identifies locations more precisely then PET scan Can detect changes that take place in less than a second

Other Imaging Techniques SQUID MEG
