Leaders with EI: Jeff Bazos, CEO of Amazon Self-Awareness: He is confident yet quirky. He has a self- deprecating sense of humor. Social Awareness: He is known for his obsessive dedication to customers.  “Rather than ask what are we good at and what else can we do with that skill, you ask, who are our custeroms? What do they need? And then you say we’re going to give that to them regardless of whether we currently have the skills to do so, and we learn those skills no matter how long it takes” Self Management: He created an innovate business that changed the retail industry. He successfully adapted Amazon’s business strategy to continue to best surve the customer. Relationship to Management: He focused on building long-term relationships. He is highly collaborative.

Leaders with EI: Ursala Burns, CEO of Xerox Self-Awareness: She is highly confident, yet humble. She knows her strengths. She is aware of her position in the company and the overall image she projects.  Quoted in a NYT article saying, “The accolades that I get for doing absolutely nothing are amazing […] The real story is not Ursala Burns. I just happen to be the person standing up here at this point representing Xerox.” Social Awareness: She is open, grounded, and down to earth. She does not put herself above others in the company. Self-Management: She is a highly driven individual and speaks openly about the company’s priorities and future growth. She played a pivotal role in Xerox’s transformation. Relationship Management: She is known for her frankeness and sharp humor. She is recognized as being forward and direct when problems arise in the company.

Simple Things to Ask Yourself How will getting upset help me? Where am I on the ladder of inference? What’s the bright side? How could I check to see if this is really true? How satisfying do I think this will be? How satisfying was it actually? Why do I feel this way? What do I really mean when I say this? What are other people around me feeling?
