Neutralization and Conductivity

Neutralization and Conductivity The conductivity of a neutralized acid-base mixture is dependent on the salt produced! If the salt produced is a soluble salt, then the neutralized acid-base mixture will be a good conductor of electricity. If the salt produced is an insoluble salt, then the neutralized acid-base mixture will be a poor conductor of electricity. Soluble salts produce lots of free moving ions in water! Insoluble salts produce very few free moving ions in water!

Neutralization and Conductivity Acid + Base → Water + Salt Lots of free moving ions in the water! OH1- H1+ Cl1- HOH HOH Na1+ H1+ OH1- Cl1- OH1- OH1- H1+ H1+ Na1+ Cl1- Cl1- H1+ Na1+ Na1+ HOH Cl1- OH1- H1+ OH1- Na1+ OH1- HOH OH1- H1+ Cl1- Cl1- H1+ Na1+ Cl1- Na1+ Na1+

Neutralization and Conductivity Acid + Base → Water + Salt Very few free moving ions in the water! SO42- OH1- H1+ HOH HOH Ca2+ H1+ OH1- SO42- H1+ OH1- Ca2+ H1+ H1+ SO42- HOH OH1- HOH OH1- H1+ OH1- H1+ OH1- Ca2+ OH1- Ca2+ SO42- H1+ HOH HOH OH1- OH1- H1+ OH1- H1+ SO42- H1+ H1+ Ca2+ OH1- CaSO4 CaSO4 SO42- Ca2+

Neutralization and Conductivity 1) In general, sulfuric acid is a ____________ conductor of electricity. Write the equation for the neutralization of sulfuric acid with barium hydroxide. __________________________ ______________________ Compared with sulfuric acid, how well does the resulting mixture of the neutralization of sulfuric acid with barium hydroxide conduct electricity and why? ___________________________________ good 1 H2SO4(aq) + 1 Ba(OH)2(aq) → 1 Ba SO4 SO4(s) + 2 HOH(l) The resulting mixture conducts less well because BaSO4 is insoluble in water.

Neutralization and Conductivity 2) In general, hydrochloric acid is a _________ conductor of electricity. Write the equation for the neutralization of hydrochloric acid with barium hydroxide. __________________________ ______________________ Compared with hydrochloric acid, how well does the resulting mixture of the neutraliza- tion of hydrochloric acid with barium hydrox- ide conduct electricity and why? ___________________________________ good 2 HCl(aq) 1 Ba(OH)2(aq) → + 1 Ba Cl Cl2(aq) Cl2 + 2 HOH(l) The resulting mixture conducts as well because BaCl2 is soluble in water.

Neutralization and Conductivity 3) In general, acetic acid is a ______________ conductor of electricity. Write the equation for the neutralization of acetic acid with calcium hydroxide. __________________________ ______________________ Compared with acetic acid, how well does the resulting mixture of the neutralization of acetic acid with calcium hydroxide conduct electricity and why? ___________________________________ poor 2 HC2H3O2(aq) + 1 Ca(OH)2(aq) → 1 Ca (C2H3O2)2 (C2H3O2)2(aq) C2H3O2 + 2 HOH(l) The resulting mixture conducts better because Ca(C2H3O2)2 is soluble in water.

Neutralization and Conductivity 4) In general, potassium hydroxide is a ______________ conductor of electricity. Write the equation for the neutralization of potassium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. __________________________ ______________________ Compared with potassium hydroxide, how well does the resulting mixture of the neutral- ization of potassium hydroxide with Hydro- chloric acid conduct electricity and why? ___________________________________ good 1 KOH(aq) + 1 HCl(aq) → 1 K Cl Cl(aq) + 1 HOH(l) The resulting mixture conducts as well because KCl is soluble in water.
