Conductivity

Remember Ions are charged particles Electricity flows due to the flow of electrons – You can think of electricity as a river and the water is the electron Well, in an ionic solution, there is a flow of electrons as electrons are exchanging between cation and anions The dissociation of solids into their ions conducts ELECTRICITY!

Summary A conducting solution contains ions The greater the concentration of ions, the greater the conductivity If a substance contains cations and anions, it will conduct. – This means ionic compound If a substance is made up of non-metal and non-metal, it will not conduct

Summary Compounds that start with C (carbon) typically do not conduct. – Only exception is CH 3 COOH (acetic acid/vinegar) Acids and bases conduct as they dissociate too

Flow chart Is it a metal? If yes – conducts Is the substances ionic? If yes – conducts Is the substance an acid or base? If yes – conducts Is the phase a solid? If yes – does not conduct If none of the above – does not conduct
