St. Nicholas We looks forward to Christmas from the beginning of December when the Advent started. We have got very beutiful tradition in this season – on 6th December St. Nicholas is coming and bringing sweets for us.

Crib festival At school we have crib festival before Christmas– we remember the birth of Jesus. Then we have Christmas vacation.

Christmas dinner In Slovakia our typical Christmas dinners consists of: Cabbage soup or lentil soup. Fried fish – usually carp. Potato salad

On the festive table there can´t miss wafers and honey, nuts, apples, garlic, oranges,...

Some Slovak traditions Before dinner we slice an apple, which is supposed to connect family together. We break nuts because we want to know whether we will be healthy. We eat wafers with honey in order to be healthy.

Other traditions We give great gifts to each other. On Christmas Eve – it is on 24th December we go to the church at midnight mass. We called this evening – Štedrý večer. We have got 2 Christmas holidays after Christmas Eve.

Caroling To our traditions caroling belonged in the past. This tradition we remain till today only another way.

New Year's Eve and New Year In December we celebrate two holidays: New Year's Eve called Silvester in our country. It is the end of the year full of fun. We do fireworks in the squares. New Year - we wish good luck and health to each other.
