Molecular naming coventions

Concept map A synthesis reaction or direct combination reaction is one of the most common types of chemical reactions. In a synthesis reaction two or more chemical species combine to form a more complex product. Atoms have neutron and Valency Electron Proton Atoms

1.H Hydrogen

2. C carbon

3. Li Lithium

4. Ti Titanium

5. Au Gold

6. Ag Silver

Molecular naming conventions Atoms are the building blocks of matter. A molecule is a group of atoms. Atoms are sometimes named after the first letter. H for Hydrogen C for carbon They are sometimes based on the first two letters Li for Lithium Ti for Titanium Sometimes the letters have nothing to do with the element. Au for Gold, Ag for silver If there is a number following the element it means how many atoms there are. For example, H2O two hydrogen and one Oxygen, H 2 O 4 S two hydrogen, oxygen and four sulphur Order is usually following the rule developed by Edwin Hill in carbon first then Hydrogen second then alphabetical order

H2O means 2 hydrogen 1 oxygen

H C Li Ti Au Ag
