WHAT DOES SKILLS LOOK LIKE IN THE CLASSROOM? Warm up – Blending words (10 – 15 words) Chaining folder- manipulating/reading decodable words By unit 8 the focus moves away from chaining folders. New skill taught – whole class New skill practiced – small group/individual work Worksheet work, reading with a partner, games, etc.
WHAT SKILLS SHOULD MY CHILD BE ABLE TO DO AT THIS POINT IN THE YEAR? What we have already learned… Read 3 letter decodable words Segment words by sounds (bat b…a…t) Know all letter sounds (except /q/) Write all letters in lowercase
DECODABLE WORDS 100% made up of letters that can be sounded out by your child. Your child CAN read the word, just give them time to sound it out.
WHERE WE ARE NOW Practicing naming letters (by letter name and by sound) Reading decodable words in a sentence form. Reading 3 and 4 letter decodable words. Writing two to three word sentences with no ‘tricky’ words. Cat in hat. Guided writing – copying decodable words and illustrating the sentence. Comprehension- Able to understand what they read in a story.
WHERE WE ARE HEADING.. Blends and digraphs Blends – 2 letters each make a sound (ex. Slip) Digraphs- letter team, two letters work together to make 1 sound ch sh th qu ng Double letter spelling - may cause problems when writing, exposure to text will help. bb ggllpptt ddccmmrrzz ffcknnss
Tricky words Only part of the word is decodable. The part of the word that is decodable will be underlined as students learn these words. “the” /th/ /u/ Long Vowels a, e, i, o, u (silent e vs. magic e) WHERE WE ARE HEADING..
HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD PRACTICE THESE SKILLS? Blending sounds together Chaining folder – Stretchy the snake Guess my word (slowly stretch out a word) Roll a word Reading words Decodable word bingo Decodable word memory match Decodable word game board Writing words: Dictation tests - call out words and phrases to your child while they write the words, have them write them in shaving cream, colored pencils, dry erase markers, etc. Pick a phrase- write phrases on cards and have your child pull it out of a hat
