James Monroe,  Elected America’s fifth president in 1816  Last president to serve in the Revolutionary War  Last president of Virginia dynasty  Last of the “Founding Fathers” to become president

The Monroe Doctrine  The Monroe Doctrine declares the western hemisphere off limits to colonization and interference by European nations  Monroe Doctrine governs American foreign policy for the next century  The only reason the doctrine works is because the imperial navy of Great Britain is backing up America

The American System  Protective Tarriff (tax) to promote trade  Internal Improvements to build infrastructure (Canals, roads)  Erie Canal, Route 40, Pennsylvania Turnpike  Proposed by Henry Clay

The Era of Good Feelings  After the War of 1812, Americans have a new sense of NATIONALISM: a sense of patriotism and national pride  There is only one political party, the Democratic- Republicans (no partisan warfare)  James Monroe runs unopposed in 1820 and is virtually unanimously reelected in the Electoral College  Monroe’s presidency is called “The Era of Good Feelings”
