Substance abuse is a problem of epidemic proportions in our community

Over 20,000 people in Durham County are addicted to alcohol or drugs

People suffering with addiction are in your workplace, your church, your extended family.

Think about this…

1 in 10 of the people that you see everyday has a substance abuse problem

Who are these people?

Forget the stereotypes Look in the mirror They are people just like you and me

Substance abuse costs Durham County over a quarter billion dollars a year

Lost productivity Increased crime, court and prison costs Increased strain on healthcare facilities

Not to mention ruined lives and broken families

Addiction to alcohol or drugs is not a moral failing

It is not the result of a person’s lack of will power to quit

Addiction to alcohol or drugs is a chronic disease like diabetes, hypertension or asthma

People choose to start drinking alcohol or taking drugs, but no one chooses to become addicted

But there is good news

Treatment works Remission from addiction is possible Lives and families can be restored Substance Abuse can be Prevented
