Thursday, October 30th, 2014 HW= Week 9 Agenda Problems Objective: : We will convert between atoms and grams using Avogadro’s Number and molar mass. Catalyst: The students not only counted how many fans attended, but also counted the number of fans from the opposing team as a comparison. Is the number of opposing team’s fans an independent or dependent variable in this study? Standard: IOD 202: Identify basic features of a table, graph, or diagram. Classroom expectations: Wear Kenwood ID. Cell phones, music players, and headphones are put away. Food is disposed of or put away. Dressed appropriately. Notebook is out and you are ready for today’s class.

Mole Island! Mass 1 mole = molar mass (in g) (g) MOLE Atoms 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 atoms Atoms

Practice Complete the 1 step conversions A-D on your sheet. This is review from the last 2 days.

Answers A. 8.4 x 1023 atoms of Cs B. 6.49 moles of Na C. 51 grams of S D. 0.250 mole CaO

Think. Pair. Share. Why can’t we convert directly from mass to atoms or from atoms to mass?

Remember when?? Convert 3520 seconds to hours Can you do this in one step? How can we use our T chart to help answer this question? 3520 seconds 1 minute 1 hours = 0.978 hours 60 seconds 60 minutes

The Mole When going from atoms/molecules to grams When going from grams to atoms/molecules 1 mole Molar Mass (grams)  PT Given Unit (Atoms) (6.02 x 1023 atoms) 1 mole Given Unit (Grams) 1 mole 6.02 x 1023 atoms Molar Mass (grams)  PT 1 mole

The Mole: Gram to Atom How many atoms are in 360 grams of bromine? Ans: 2.71239 x 1024 = 2.7 x 1024 atoms 360 grams 1 mole 6.02 x 1023 atoms 79.90 grams 1 mole

The Mole: Atom to Gram What is the mass of 5.6 x 1025 molecules of ammonia (NH3)? Ans: 1585.116 = 1600 grams NH3 17.04 grams 5.6 x 1025 molecules 1 mole 1 mole (6.02 x 1023 molecules)

Practice Worksheet Complete the problems on your practice worksheet making sure to follow all instructions.

Exit Ticket/Mini Quiz #2 Today’s Objective: SWBAT convert between moles and grams using molar mass I have no idea Need tutoring- Almost there I got it!! and need tutoring 1 2 3 4 5 Answer the following questions (show all work): 1.) How many atoms are in 45 grams of water? 2.) How many grams of zinc are found in 3.25 x 1025 atoms of zinc?
