Warsaw Agricultural University FACULTY OF FORESTRY Poland

Faculty of Forestry Faculty of Forestry History of the Faculty started almost two hundred years ago (1816). Today this is one of the 11 faculties at Warsaw Agricultural University, and the oldest and the biggest school of forestry in Poland.

The former building of Forestry Faculty

In 2003 the Faculty was moved to a new campus in the southern part of Warsaw (Ursynów district).

Part of teaching is organized in the Experimental Forest in Rogów (LZD)

This place was created to fulfill the educational and research needs of the Faculty

Staff structure There are about 120 people working at the Faculty. Some 90 of them are university teachers. Administrative crew consists of 5 people.

Teaching activity More than 300 students enrolled every year Over 1500 students registered Reconstruction of study curricula under Bologna agreement, An extensive PhD programs with more than 60 participants

international programs SOCRATES, ERASMUS, member of the SILVA Network, Teaching activity

Units of the Faculty 1. Department of Forest Botany 2. Department of Silviculture 3. Department of Forest Protection and Ecology 4. Department of Forest Management, Geomatics and Forest Economics. 5. Department of Forest Utilization 6. Division of Dendrometry and Forest Productivity

Department of Forest Botany Department Head: Professor Stefan ZAJĄCZKOWSKI, Ph.D., D.Sc. Academic staff consists of 10 scientists.

Department of Forest Botany The main areas of research are: - role of phytohormones in xylogenesis, rhyzogenesis and senescence, environmental stress and water transport; - dynamics of forest plants communities; - introduction, growth and development of foreign arborescent plants.

Department of Silviculture Department Head: Professor Henryk ŻYBURA, Ph.D., D.Sc. There are 12 scientists in academic staff.

Department of Silviculture The main areas of research: - development of natural stands; - identification of silvicultural aims in managed forests; - inter- and intra-populational variability of different provenances of both: domestic and exotic species, assessment of their value in silviculture; - improving conditions and production methods for planting vegetative and generative trees and shrubs; - study on conditions for establishment and development of natural regeneration, formation of two-storied forest stands. - plants.

Department of Forest Protection and Ecology Department Head: Professor Sławomir MAZUR, Ph.D., D.Sc. Twenty scientists work in the Department. Their main areas of research are as follow: - influence of forest management and agriculture utilization on composition and structure of faunal and epigeal soil inhabitants; - ecological effects of forest fires and chemicalization of the forest environment; - monitoring changes in forest ecosystems; - biology, ecology, economics importance and taxonomy of insects, spiders, birds and mammals;

- the role of fungi in wood decay; - diseases of forest trees caused by air pollution and climate change; - biodiversity of fungi and it’s protection; - introduction of biological and chemical methods of forest protection; - influence of selective forest protection agents on insect communities; - the impact of herbivores on forest vegetation; - modeling of wildlife management.

Department of Forest Management, Geomatics and Forest Economics. Department Head: Professor Edward STĘPIEŃ, Ph.D., D.Sc. It is the biggest Department at the Faculty, with 24 scientific workers. The main area of research: - integrated forest inventory systems for the purposes of complex assesment of forest condition, valuation, classification and management of multifunctional forest; - methods of organizing time and space in sustainable forest management (state, private, protected and municipal forests);

- methods of collection, processing and accessing spatial information for the purposes of forestry, environmental protection and landscape planning; - the role of forestry in regional development; - the economic value of forest and their products; - incorporating non-timber products into forest accounting.

Department of Forest Utilization Department Head: Professor Piotr PASCHALIS, Ph.D., D.Sc. At this Department we have 14 scientific workers.

Department of Forest Utilization The main area of research looks like: - organizational and technological processes of timber harvesting; - harvesting of raw material and by-products; - evaluation of different systems of harvesting worldwide; - developing forest infrastructure; - ergonomic analysis combined with forest technology; - non-wood forest products and services -...

Division of Dendrometry and Forest Productivity Division Head: Professor Arkadiusz BRUCHWALD, Ph.D., D.Sc. Six scientific workers belong to this unit. Their main area of research: - development and implementing the forest growth models; - study on influence of different factors and silvicultural measures on the total production and growth; - assessing and improving methods of volume and increment determination.
