Tiberius Background Tiberius Claudius Nero was born in 42 BC and was the son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusullia He was the adopted son of Augustus, whose imperial institutions and imperial boundaries he sought to preserve. In his last years he became a tyrannical recluse, inflicting a reign of terror against the major personages of Rome.

Tiberius’ road to Fame In 12 BC Agrippa died, making Tiberius the in line as the successor to Augustus In 4 AD Augustus fully adopted Tiberius as is son making him now Tiberius Julius Caesar Finally in 14 AD Augustus died and Tiberius claim the thrown and becomes emperor of Rome

Tiberius At the beginning of Tiberius reign the powerful Danube and Rhine legions mutinied, because some of Augustus promises regarding their terms of service and benefits were not met. Also they had sworn allegiance neither to the state, nor to Tiberius, but to Augustus. Though, after initial difficulties, these disturbances were eventually suppressed. In 26 AD Tiberius’ son and Nephew (Drusus and Germanicus) died. –He was so emotionally disturbed that he went up to his holiday villa for a while.

Tiberius and Sejanus From AD Tiberius had to deal with Sejanus. –Sejanus hailed from Volsinii in Etruria and was friends with Tiberius for a while before 23 AD ( they were still friends just not close, and things were going downhill. In 25 AD Sejanus asked for Livilla hand in marriage, and Tiberius declined. –This upseted Sejanus –Also because of ageing, he soon after left Rome to live in Capri. Sejanus’ power started to rise and he finally rose into power and arrested and imprisoned some people close to Tiberius Later Tiberius sent a letter to Rome praising Sejanus and telling them to come arrest him for being a traitor. –Secretly all of Sejanus’ men turned on him and arrested him and his family.

End of Tiberius In his last years as emperor, he was not in Rome, mostly in Capri, but he stayed in touch with Rome by letters As a result, no measures were taken for the succession, beyond vague indications of favor to his nephew Gaius(Caligula) and his grandson Tiberius Gemellus Tiberius died quietly in a villa at Misenum on 16 March A.D. 37 at the age of 78.
