Picture Books What do pictures do for books? What would a picture book with no pictures be like? Challenge: I will read you a great book (written by B.J. Novak). I want you to imagine what pictures would look like IF you could put pictures in this book. Record how the author “illustrates” without using pictures.

The Crossover Take a look at the visuals Kwame Alexander uses to “illustrate” like B.J. Novak did. What do you notice? What helps to read the poem?

Your Turn Create your own poem that describes you now. How have you changed since your first year at JML? What makes you, YOU? How are you now prepared to be an “eighth grader”? Experiment with the way the text is written or delivered to the reader.
