On the Road to the Research Essay Reviewing What You Know and What You Have Left to Do

 Re-read Essay 1 and consider the comments.  Make note of the common proof-reading marks you might see on your essay.  After you’ve carefully read your essay, make a list of five things you need to improve for your next essay. Reviewing Past Work

What can you do to improve your essay writing? Be concrete and specific. Freewriting

Next, let’s get you on track for your next assignment.

 Let’s review the expectations upon you for the next few weeks.  Any questions about the forthcoming assignments? First, Review Assignment Requirements

 Reread your essay one more time.  Freewrite for five minutes on the following prompt: What still intrigues you about your topic? What is left to say?  Re-read your freewrite. What is most important to you in this piece of writing? What do you find most interesting? Finding Your Focus

 Using the technique of looping, freewrite again based on what you’ve just determined to be the most significant piece.  Again, read your freewriting. Select what you think is most significant.  One last time, freewrite on this most significant thing. Finding Your Focus

Take fifteen minutes to review the sources you brought today. Highlight or underline anything that looks especially useful. Now, considering what you’ve written…

 Explain to your partner what you’ve learned about your topic so far and what you find most interesting.  Partners, take notes on what you hear.  Now do it again with swapped roles. Find a Partner

Highlight anything you find interesting or significant. Review what your partner has made note of.

What will your research essay be about? Freewrite for ten minutes on this new prompt:

Try using “clustering” for your research essay topic. Using what you’ve just come up with…

Wade through your materials from today and determine your thesis statement. Homework Assignment / Module 9
