College & Drinking  Approximately 88% of college students consume alcohol – U.S. Department of Health & Human Services  College communities –such as the UCF area– have a large number of drinkers

Drunken Driving  17,748 alcohol related motorist fatalities in 2001 (1,264 in Florida) – Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)  Approximately 30% of Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related accident in their lifetime – MADD  42% of 2001 fatal automobile accidents in Florida were alcohol related –MADD  Between Thanksgiving and New Years in 2001 there were 2,053 alcohol-related motorist deaths in the United States –MADD

Drunk Driving Prevention  Abstinence from drinking alcohol  Do not drive while intoxicated  Designated drivers

Problems of Not Drinking Alcohol  Many of the times partiers want to drink and are likely to drink anyway

Problems of Not Driving Intoxicated  Bars and clubs must eventually close and intoxicated customers may be forced to drive home instead of sober up  Party hosts may not want people staying over and throw-out intoxicated people  Intoxicated individuals may need or feel the need to return home for whatever reason

Designated Driving  Arguments against Designated Driving –Designated drivers may have had a drink or two –Intoxicated passengers dangerously distracting to the designated drivers

Designated Driving  Benefits of Designated Driving –Designated drivers are safer drivers and maintain better judgment over drunken drivers –Designated drivers provide a safe ride home –Designated drivers provide a legal ride home –Designated drivers can provide a ride to many intoxicated individuals –not just one

Designated Driving  Benefits to the Designated Driver –Peace of mind that friends or family will arrive home safely –Free non-alcoholic beverages at select clubs or bars –No cover charge at select clubs –Still enjoy time with their friends or family at social gatherings

It’s Your Choice  Be a designated driver  Choose a designated driver

Thank You
