HOLLY SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL Golden Hawk Parent Academy Overview of Sessions – Spring 2016 The Holly Springs High School Golden Hawk Parent Academy is designed to provide parents with additional information on a variety of topics. Our hope is to provide a base of information that will support parents in guiding their student to a successful high school experience. MADD: Power of Parents | Wednesday, January 6, 7pm, HSHS Media Center Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) presents “The Power of Parents” on January 6 at 7pm in the Holly Springs High Media Center. In this workshop, the presenter will encourage parents to start the conversation with their teens about alcohol use and provide tools for making that conversation and the ones that follow effective. All participants go home with a parent handbook that helps to provide further information to support the topics covered in the presentation. Understanding your PSAT Scores| Virtual Presentation, Date and Time TBD (last week of January) During the month of January, we will receive PSAT scores and distribute them back to students. We will host this virtual session where we explain how to interpret these results, resources for next steps, etc. Spring Open House | Tuesday, February 2, 2016, 5:30 – 7:00pm, HSHS Media Center This event will allow parents to meet their child’s second semester teachers and hear more about their classroom goals, expectations, and processes. This event will be a “walk the schedule” type of event where the parent moves through the student’s schedule. Curriculum Fair & Advanced Placement (AP) Night | Thursday, February 18, 2016, HSHS This is a great night to explore the curriculum offerings at Holly Springs High School. During this event, parents and students can explore a “fair” type of environment. Departments will highlight their various electives. On this evening, we will also offer opportunities to learn more about options of Advanced Placement courses at Holly Springs High including an overview of our AP Capstone Program. Special informational sessions will be held for rising 9 th grade parents as well. A specific schedule for this event will be posted on the HSHS website in late January. Understanding Teen Anxiety & Maintaining Balance | Thursday, March 3, 6pm, HSHS Media Center Handling anxiety is a growing struggle for many teens. During this session, counselor Becky Bloomfield will guide parents through a number of resources and essential questions for parents who are supporting students who are struggling with anxiety in their daily lives. Mapping Out The High School Journey | Virtual Session, March 15, Time TBD This session is built toward first time high school parents in grades 9 and 10. It will present not only requirements for graduation but key questions to be asking along the journey. For example, do you ever wonder what you should be doing now to support your student to maintain a wide variety of options following graduation? If you have questions about any of these sessions, please visit the HSHS Website at bit.ly/HSHSParentAcademy or contact Assistant Principal Melissa Hurst ).
