Science Fair Project “Hey Suzy! I just saw this really science project idea on YouTube that shows you how to make an egg explode with a flashlight!”

“That’s really cool Tommy! So what kind of project will it be?”

“Well Suzy….I’m gonna make the egg explode. What do you mean what kind of project?”

“Don’t you remember, Tommy? Our science project has to fall into one of the following categories:” 1) Experiment 2) Design 3) Study 4) Research Paper (Does not qualify for regional science fair)

“You know Suzy..I think I remember the teacher saying something about that. I better go back and review. Thanks.”

Experiment Probably the most familiar. It involves having a hypothesis and testing the hypothesis. You need to have an independent variable and dependent variables. If you see something cool and want to do it as your experiment, pretend you’ve never seen it happen before. Create a question, hypothesis and follow the steps for the experiment. Describe what happens for your results/observations section and use your sources to explain why this happened in your conclusion.

Design A Design is nothing like an experiment. There is no hypothesis. Instead, you are noticing a potential problem in the world and trying to come up with a solution, or trying to make an already created solution even better. There is a 9 step process that can be found on p of your textbook. Use this process instead of the scientific method.

Design For a design project, you can invent a product, service, device, application, and more. 8jPk

Study A scientific study involves having a question. For this type of project, you can follow the template for the scientific method. You will try to seek out data on your own by using the following techniques: Surveys, Questionnaires, Interviews and researching other people’s work. Interpret the data you collect and look for a relationship. Decide if the data you collect supports your hypothesis or does not.

Example of study Question: Does age affect your memory? Hypothesis: I think that age does not affect a person’s memory. Procedure: Show a list of 10 names for 10 seconds. Ask participants to write down as many names as they can remember. Calculate results for each age group and interpret data.

Research Paper A research paper is nothing new. It can include creating a model to help explain how something works, or model what something looks like. Ex: Volcano Come up with subtopics you want to learn about. Use these subtopics to organize your work into different sections.
