Senior Service Projects

Senior Service Project Overview Objective: Use critical skills (teamwork, time management, goal setting, communication, project planning, community service) to implement a community wide service project. Purpose: Final year in Rachel’s Challenge program Demonstrate compassion, kindness, and leadership through service learning. Collaborate as a class to create an original project that serves a specific community need.

Choose Projects That… Haven’t been done before Meet the needs of your identified goal/purpose for our community Require service of time and energy rather than just money. Combine the ideas of all members in your Advisory class to create unique projects Can be completed prior to April 5 th deadline.

Avoid Projects That… Have been done in the past Are associated with other classes, clubs, or activities Ex. March of Dimes, Trick-or-Treat Street, Special Olympics, Invisible Children, etc. Involve drives (clothing, books, money) Don’t meet the purpose of creating a chain reaction and leaving a legacy in our community

Capstone Students Purpose –Practice critical thinking and leadership skills by leading your class’s project. –Earn up to 5 credits (each credit=15 hours of documented work). Responsibilities –Point person of communication between classmates, Advisor, Advisory Committee, Ridge T.V., FRHS, and the community. –Organize class into committees to divide work –Be present for all project dates –Organize and implement all project details

Applying to be a Capstone Student Eligibility and Application –Recommended 1-2 people per Advisory ( why? Because earning 15 hours per credit is difficult. More people=either less hours per person or a much larger project is needed to fulfill hour requirement). –Each interested capstone student must complete Capstone Experience Application (available in North Office) –Complete pages 1-3 of Senior Service Project Planning Packet and submit by October 5 th.  Need one packet per Advisory class.

Class Committees Class will be divided into small groups called committees. Each committee is responsible for organizing a small part of the project in addition to participating on the day of the project. Committees ensure that work is divided and each class member is able to contribute to the project.

Project Planning Packet Use the rest of the time to: –Brainstorm project ideas –Identify objective of project –Plan date of project completion –Create project goals –Create detailed description of project –Begin dividing class into committees Proposal due date= October 5, 2012 Project completion date= April 5, 2013
