INTRODUCTIONS Name What your role is in the education process? Where you’re from? A favorite school memory…

MY PASSION My passion, or purpose, is to see students succeed. I love to see learners challenge themselves and reach their potential. I love the challenge of meeting kids where they are and frustrating them a bit. Pushing them to grow and learn. It hurts a bit – but the outcome is worth it! A lot like training an athlete. No pain, no gain! I like to stretch the brain! (Sorry – I’m not as good as Dr. Seuss!)

A Working Definition of Differentiation Differentiation has come to mean “consistently using a variety of instructional approaches to modify content, process, and/or products in response to learning readiness and interest of academically diverse students.” Tomlinson, Carol Ann. The Differentiated Classroom

Reasons for Differentiation One size definitely doesn’t fit all when it comes to teaching Universal lessons for an entire classroom of kids is the most efficient delivery system (unless one considers learning)

Time is a factor! Grading Meetings Teaching Recess Duty Report Cards Phone Calls Conferences Planning

Classroom Extensions – a tool to provide choices encouraging students to engage in meaningful learning experiences

Format What worked for me this year – Extension/Intervention (40-45 minutes) Introduce to students & establish timeline Checkpoints Mini-lessons when needed Share Time – this was the hardest part Assessment – an area that I worked on improving this year

Five Essential Rules for Working Independently 1 – Bothering Others 2 – Attention 3 – Work time 4 – Daily Log 5 – Working with partners I have a copy of the specific rules from The Cluster Grouping Handbook: A School-Wide Model by Susan Winebrenner, M.S. & Dina Brulles, Ph.D. (2008).

Fruit Basket Mix-up Get up and find a partner you may not know very well Introduce yourselves Share a funny story from school, can’t remember one? Share a joke or riddle.

What to think about when creating your own extensions Variety of learning styles Multiple Intelligences Bloom’s Taxonomy Vary your verbs & your products Extension menus are not just for your “good students” – they are motivating to everyone as long as they are level appropriate

Thank you! Take them on an adventure and expand the opportunities for student interest & choice. You’ll be amazed at what your students are capable of – if only give the chance!
