Leadership: Session #1 Creating an Environment for Mathematical Success

When we move on, people do not remember us for what we do for ourselves. They remember us for what we do for them. They are the inheritors of our work. One of the great joys and grave responsibilities of leaders is making sure that those in their care live lives not only of success, but also of significance. Kouzes and Posner, A Leader's Legacy, 2006

Goals for Session build awareness of various leadership frameworks and explore the interconnections between them further develop facilitation skills by engaging in courageous conversations using conversation starters

All ideas will be listened to carefully and responded to respectfully Everyone will have a voice All questions and comments will be presented with the intent to move the collective forward Clarifying questions are welcome Everyone will engage fully in the moment Group Norms

7 Principles of Fierce Conversations Master the courage to interrogate reality. Come out from behind yourself into the conversation and make it real. Be here, prepared to be nowhere else. Tackle your toughest challenge today. Obey your instincts. Take responsibility for your emotional wake. Let silence do the heavy lifting. Conversation Starters, page 22

Exploring Leadership Frameworks Creating a Map for Mathematics Leadership With your group… –Use the pieces to create a map of the interconnections between the three Leadership Frameworks provided –Annotate connections, think alouds, etc. –Use post-it notes to record any reflective questions that arise during this activity

Exploring Leadership Frameworks Creating a Map for Mathematics Leadership Where did your group start? Which part(s) of your map supported you in… –making connections to the work you are currently involved in? –reflecting on new areas of math leadership to explore?

Conversation Starters Find your Cabin Buddies and a suitable work space. Using the strips of paper in the envelope, sort them into ‘Opening Thinking’ and ‘Focusing Thinking’ Record criteria used to establish the category and any circumstances the questions may be used. Be prepared to share.

Conversation Starters What criteria did your group use? What circumstances may the questions be used?

Coaching Moves One member of each Cabin group is identified as a coach. The coach will record dialogue as the other two buddies use selected questions to engage colleagues in reflecting throughout the following activity.

Facilitated Discussion Form a group of six by joining with another triad. One triad shares their concept map. The pair from the other triad use coaching moves question stems to prompt thinking and discussion The coach records evidence of insight gained.

Coaching Moves Question Stems Debrief

Exit Card One way that connecting the three leadership frameworks informed my thinking today is... One way I can apply conversation starters in my work is… One question that I still have about today’s session is…
