Do Now  What did you do well in your rough draft? What corrections do you think you need to make? What do you need to finish?

What’s up this week?  Homework for Friday: News article and paper  Monday: History Writing Activity  Tuesday: Finish rough draft  Wednesday: Begin typing rough draft  Thursday: Editing rough draft  Friday: News Article Presentations

What’s up today?  Explain whether Napoleon was a tyrant or a hero  Office Hours Reminder (2:15)!  Parts of a body paragraph  Work time  Ticket to Leave

Parts of a Body Paragraph Topic Sentence The “baby thesis” or reason from your introduction paragraph Background Any relevant facts we need to know to set up the argument (dates, people, etc) Evidence The “quote” Analysis / Argument Your analysis should examine the words used in the evidence and make a unique argument Transition / Conclusion One sentence to close the paragraph

Example  Napoleon was a hero because the people believed he was a hero. Napoleon regularly had paintings created that depicted him as a war hero. He decided exactly who or what should go in the paintings, how big the paintings should be, and how they should be framed. The article says, “Napoleon created a mythical image of himself.” By having complete control of his image, Napoleon was able to portray himself as all-powerful. This idea of a mythic image, a god-like image, is exactly what Napoleon wanted the French people to see. By seeing him in a certain way, the French would believe that this is the only way Napoleon could possibly be. They would continue to support Napoleon, their god-like leader, for almost a decade.

Conclusion Re-state your thesis What was your original argument? Summarize your main points What are the three main points of your paper? So what? How is this knowledge relevant today? What connections can you make between Napoleon and modern history?

Ticket to Leave  What is your weakest body paragraph?  Find a partner at your table and discuss.  Share your recommendations for change.
