Dr. Mehboob ur Rashid Lecturer in Accounting and Finance Institute of Management Studies University of Peshawar STUDENT RESISTANCE TO CHANGE

What is a Change? Change is a situation that interrupts normal patterns of organization and calls for participants to enact new patterns, involving an interplay of deliberate and emergent processes that can be highly ambiguous ( Ford et al., 2008: 363) Key Point: Change is the process of becoming different

Types of Change Low scope- evolutionary Maintains the essential framework but looks for improvement in the current situation High scope- strategic change Alters the framework and is more radical

Why do we need Change? Coping with the environment and meeting the challenges of the society For survival and sustainability To improve performance

Resistance to Change Resistance to change is defined as an unwarranted and detrimental response that arises spontaneously as a reaction to change, independent of the interactions and relationships between the change agents and the recipients (Ford et al., 2008)

Views Regarding Resistance to Change Negative view Hindrance and increase in costs to negotiate new relationships, skills, and patterns of activity Positive view: resistance as a ‘resource’ Resistance could show aspects in change process that were not considered for the change process Provides a range of opportunities for growth and development

Why Students Resist Change? The explanations for failure to change include: (a) I can't change, (b) I don't want to change, (c) I don't know what to change, or (d) I don't know how to change.

8 Change: A Non-Linear Process Time Change CycleChange Cycle Different people are at different points in the change process at the same time.

Understanding Students Resistance to Change Many students fail to seek help Students often fail to attend sessions or classes on a regular basis Students do not change their academic behaviour Fear of the unknown

Symptoms of Resistance in the Class Questioning the assignments and method of teaching Interrogating the new teaching method to the last detail Making fun of the students who actively engage in new learning and teaching methods Imagining that they will not be able to get good marks Creating problems and making several excuses and of not doing the task

Problems faced by Students Lack of learning aids Fear of loosing grades Lack of resources Communication gap Teacher- student relationship Feeling of being imposed

How I managed Students resistance to change Create a clear change vision Build trust among students Ensure a strong and consistent implementation of new teaching methods Supported student with follow-through
