Hurricanes AWG Mrs. Bailey

What are they? Huge storms that form over the ocean In the western hemisphere they are called “hurricanes” In Asia they are called “typhoons” In other places they are called “cyclones”

How do they form? It begins as a storm off of the west coast of Africa over REALLY WARM waters. Winds coming together force air upwards Winds come out of the top of the storm, allowing more air to rise from the bottom Winds outside the storm push the hurricane westward The warmer the water, the bigger the storm!

Storm Surge Water gets pushed into the storm’s center by winds. As the storm moves, the “wall” of water in the center of the storm has nowhere to go, but on shore. Storm surges cause most of the damage in hurricanes. The more sloped the coastline is, the worse the storm surge!

When is Hurricane Season? June-November in the US

How Do They Get Named? Men’s & Women’s names are used now There are 6 lists the rotate If a hurricane causes significant damage, they name is retired and not used again

Stages of a Hurricane

How They Are Measured
