U SE OF THE T ERM Meaning—” proclaimer of good news.” Referring to definite work – “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.” {Ephesians 4:11} – “On the next day we who were Paul's companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.” {Acts 21:8}

U SE OF THE T ERM Meaning—” proclaimer of good news.” Timothy urged to do the work of an Evangelist – “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” {2 Timothy 4:5}

T HE W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST The work of Philip Proclaiming Christ – “Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them…Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.” {Acts 8:5,35} Attended by miracles to confirm the word – “And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.”{Acts 8:6}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Preached wherever the opportunity afforded. “But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.” {Acts 8:40}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Baptizing those who believed. “But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.” {Acts 8:12} “So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.” {Acts 8:38}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST “Reprove, Rebuke, Exhort.” All three must be done “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” {2 Timothy 4:1,2}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Complete organization of congregations “For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you.” {Titus 1:5}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Indoctrinate the Church “Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. One of them, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.“ This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.” {Titus 1:11-13}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Perpetuate the Gospel by committing it unto others who will faithfully teach it. “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” {2 Timothy 2:2}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Give his time fully to the Lord’s work “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” {1 Timothy 4:13-16}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Give his time fully to the Lord’s work “And they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” {2 Timothy 4:4,5}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Warn against the dangers of apostasy. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.” {1 Timothy 4:1-3}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Protect the church from false teachers. “As I urged you when I went into Macedonia-- remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.” {1 Timothy 1:3,4}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Assist in building up local churches. Timothy tarried at Ephesus “To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. As I urged you when I went into Macedonia-- remain in Ephesus...” {1 Timothy 1:2,3}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Assist in building up local churches. Titus was left in Crete “For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you.” {Titus 1:5}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Summarize, the work of an Evangelist : – Preach the word “ Preach the word ! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” {2 Timothy 4:2}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Summarize, the work of an Evangelist : – Preach the word – Guard the faith “O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge—by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you.” {1 Timothy 6:20,21}

W ORK OF AN E VANGELIST Summarize, the work of an Evangelist : – Preach the word – Guard the faith – Handle aright the word of Life “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” {2 Timothy 2:15}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Keep thyself pure “Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people's sins; keep yourself pure.” {1Timothy 5:22}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST “Gentle, apt to teach, forbearing.” “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient.” {2Timothy 2:22-24}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST “Gentle, apt to teach, forbearing.” “In humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.” {2Timothy 2:25,26}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Diligent. “ Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.” {2Timothy 2:15,16}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Steadfast in the faith “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” {2 Timothy 3:14,15}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Loyal in the truth “If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions.” {1 Timothy 6:3,4}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Refusing false speculative doctrines and uncompromising toward those who teach them. “Useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.” {1 Timothy 6:5}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Refusing false speculative doctrines and uncompromising toward those who teach them. “If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.” {1 Timothy 4:6}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST An example to them that believe. “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” {1 Timothy 4:12}

Q UALIFICATIONS OF AN E VANGELIST Careful both to himself and what he teaches others. “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” {1 Timothy 4:16}
