Global History & Geography 9 Early Humans

Olduvai Gorge is an archaeological site located in the eastern Serengeti Plains, which is in northern Tanzania. The gorge is a very steep sided ravine roughly 30 miles long and 295 ft. deep. Exposed deposits show rich fossil fauna, many hominid remains and items belonging to the one of the oldest stone tool technologies, called Olduwan. Where early humans (hominids) were found …. Olduvai Gorge is part of which geographic feature?

Who found the early humans … It was Mary's 1959 discovery of the Zinjanthropus cranium at Olduvai that captured worldwide attention and made the Leakeys a household name. Building on this find, Louis and Mary attracted a multidisciplinary team of specialists to work at Olduvai and launched the modern science of paleoanthropology, the study of human origins. Louis Leakey and his wife, Mary, dig for bits of bones of prehistoric humans in Tanganyika in 1961 What is the term for early humans?

How old were the fossils? What would they look like? What things/ advances are they known for?

How do their skulls compare in size?

Migration Theory Where do scientists believe humans first lived? Why?

Technological Innovations and Social Behaviors How did the advances from H. Habilis to H. Erectus help H. Erectus to survive?
