Presentation transcript:

Is a Physics Degree at St. FX right for you?

What are our goals? Students will receive lecture, laboratory, and computer training in the basic concepts of physics. The amount of training will depend on program. As a result students will also be introduced to critical thinking, abstract thinking, and quantitative conceptualization (intellectual commando, multi- sport athlete). Students are also involved in current physics research.

What do I need to succeed? Curiosity Ability to meet a challenge Mathematical skills Ability to see possibilities beyond strict course material.

What can I do with a physics degree? Path to graduate school. Not just in physics but a variety of related fields (even on St. FX campus) Physics education Medical school (at least 2/3 of those who apply are accepted) Other careers where acquired skills are useful

What courses are there in physics? 2nd year: Math Phys, Electric Circuits, Classical Dynamics I, Modern Physics, Astronomy, Digital Electronics, Atmospheric Physics (new) 3rd year: Optics, Electromagnetism I, Properties of Matter, Electronics, Quantum Mechanics I, Thermal Physics, Classical Dynamics II, Subatomic Physics 4th year: EM II, QM II, Thermal II, Solid State, Biophysics, Atomic and Molecular, Lasers, Fluids Math courses: matrix and linear algebra, multivariable calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, vector calculus, complex variables

Cool things in physics? Paul Corkum has developed an attosecond laser (winner of Herzberg Gold Medal). The Large Hadron Collider is looking for the Higgs boson. Peter Giles, Olympian, physicist, astronaut? Willard Boyle, inventor of CCD, born in Amherst Allan MacDonald, pioneer in low-dimensional and nano- physics
