Iowa Strategic Goals Program For Metal Finishers

Iowa Strategic Goals Program Developed by diverse stakeholder group Oversight by stakeholder selected committee Progress based on individual participant baseline data Participants rewarded for progress

Iowa SGP Goals 50% Water Reduction 25% Energy Reduction 50% Reduction of Hazardous Sludges 50% Reduction in Metals Emissions 98% Metals Utilization 90% Reduction in Organic TRI Emissions

2001 National Results (Normalized by Sales ) 511 Participating Companies Water Discharge Reduced 38% Energy Usage Reduced 8.5% Sludge Generation Reduced 16% Metal Emissions Reduced 64% Sludge To Landfills Reduced 23% Organic TRI Emissions Reduced 63%

Pennsylvania SGP Results Baseline Water usage reduced 96,121,018 Gal Sludge landfilled reduced 126,442 Lb Sludge generated reduced 156,983 Lb Metals emissions reduced 3,297 Lb Organic TRI emissions reduced 176,003 Lb

POTW Benefits Industries making progress toward the SGP goals require less oversight Progress on the “ladder” further reduces potential for negative impact to the POTW Allows more time for focus on problems with Metal Finishers or Platers not committed to the goals of the Iowa SGP

POTW Benefits cont. Opportunity for positive recognition for Industries POTW “Certificate of Compliance” City Council Recognition Press Releases

Iowa SGP Performance Ladder Bronze (Entry) Level Requirements:  Submit sign-up form and baseline report

Bronze Level Incentives  Certificate of Participation  Invitation to join SGP List Server  Recognition and progress posted on SGP Website  Training Opportunities for SGP members  Free admission to selected SGP Workshops  Priority contact with technical assistance providers  Access to compliance and waste reduction experts  Invitation to participate in SGP Workgroups
