Prepared by the Honor Committee Concept Review & Non-Toleration Honor 3 -3

Prepared by the Honor Committee Objectives Review key points from lesson 3-2 Discuss concepts regarding “Spirit of the Code” issues Relay the efforts of the 2013 Honor Committee to the class of 2015 Discuss tips to help prevent potential honor violations Utilize case studies to facilitate discussion among the participants

Prepared by the Honor Committee How is FERPA relevant to the Honor System? What are the three options a cadet has if he/she is found guilty of an honor violation? What is an Honor Board of Review? What is quibbling? Review

Prepared by the Honor Committee Spirit of the Honor Code Live by the Spirit of the Code and live “above the common level of life” Though the Honor Code serves as the minimal standard it also: Embraces truthfulness in its aspects of cadet life – prohibits lying Calls for complete fairness in human relations and personal endeavors – prohibits cheating Requires respect for the person and property of others - prohibits stealing Demands a personal commitment to uphold the ethical standards of The Citadel – prohibits toleration of unethical acts

Prepared by the Honor Committee The Spirit of the Code should change the way we live our lives, during and after our time at The Citadel. It is designed to train cadets to live honorably both on and off campus. What relationship does the Spirit of the Code have to the Code itself? The Honor Code A cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. The Spirit of the Code

Prepared by the Honor Committee Brief Reminder… Plagiarism has accounted for a large number of honor accusations and violations. Please remember to give credit to the source of your information when you are writing a paper.

Prepared by the Honor Committee Honor Rep Training Training of the 2014 Honor Committee ended in December and the rising committee has been elected. The training program involves 9 lessons about the Honor System and will begin for the Class of 2015 next fall. This is a great opportunity for you to learn the Honor System more intimately. Attendance at the lessons is mandatory in order to run to become an honor representative, as well as a 2.3 GPA and a 2B status in the spring when elections take place.

Prepared by the Honor Committee Training Continued Name some qualities that you think would be important in an honor representative. After having listed some qualities that you think would be important for an honor representative to possess, think to yourself, “What sophomores in my company might be a good addition to the 2015 committee?”

Prepared by the Honor Committee Non-Toleration Non-Toleration is the idea of being proactive in the Honor System to prevent Honor Violations from occurring By not tolerating unethical actions from your fellow cadets, you can prevent them from ever stepping foot in an Honor Trial

Prepared by the Honor Committee Preventative Measures Complete assignments in a timely manner and encourage your roommate to do so as well. Procrastination is a primary reason for cheating Ask the proper question, do not let other cadets become the victim of an improper question Be observant; don’t allow your peers to use unapproved sources Do not put weekend duty or all-ins takers in a position that they may have to write you up for AWOL
