Australian Domain Names .au domain space is managed by auDA  auDA is a federal government-endorsed organisation which authorises policy and self-regulates the industry  current second level domain names reflect the website’s purpose, for example:.comused for commercial enterprises.orgused for not-for-profit organisations.eduused for educational institutions

Community Geographic Domain Names (CGDN)  auDA has now created eight new geographic second level domains  Second level domains for each state and territory:.act.au,.nsw.au,.nt.au,.qld.au,.sa.au,.tas.au,.vic.au,.wa.au

Community Geographic Domain Names (CGDN)  All CGDNs will be registered as 3 rd level domain names.  For example:  CGDNs are reserved for communities - they cannot be licensed by single entities such as local government, business or individuals

CGDN Policies  Domain names are available for populated addressable localities within Australia  Names can only be licensed by a legally registered not-for-profit entity or a special committee of local council  Registrant must be representative of the local community  Domain name licence is for two (2) years

CGDN Policies  Registrant can only use the domain name for the purpose of operating a community website  Licence renewal is based on registrant: still meeting eligibility criteria using the domain name to operate community website

CGDN Application Criteria  Not-for-profit legal entity or special committee of local council and broadly representative of the local community  Be run by the community for the community  Can apply for one locality name or more names if these are adjoining localities

CGDN Application Process  Consult with the broad community  Establish a community website group  Register interest on CGDN website  Form a not-for-profit legal, entity if necessary  Establish roles and sub-committees  Prepare application documents  Complete application form online at

Purpose of [Place name] community website  Be the official community website  Quick and easy to remember  Provide content determined by community needs and consultation  Useful source of local information for users within the community  Provides a ‘snaphot’ of the community for external people
