 The Progressive Education Association  1919 – States must provide public transportation for school students  Urban Population Grows forcing more students in schools in the city

 Pope Pius XI condemns co-education  The International Council for Exceptional Children  Tennessee vs. John Scopes. Results made it illegal to teach evolution in schools  The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Jean Piaget's The Child's Conception of the World

 Forced Bussing  1979 –America exceeds 150 billion on educational funding  The Indian Education Act becomes law: Must meet the needs of American Indians and Alaskan Natives students in schools  Title IX of the Education Amendments becomes a law. Schools cannot discriminate due to gender.

 The Rehabilitation Act becomes law. Students with help problems are eligible for a 504 plan.  The Education of All Handicapped Children Act (PL ).

 John Holt's book, Teach Your Own: A Hopeful Path for Education,  Madeline C. Hunter's book, Mastery Teaching  Public Law , the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for special education students.  Teach for America: Helps rural areas and under developing counties.

 Education Reform  1991 – First charter school approved  Jacqueline and Martin Brooks' In Search of Understanding: The Case for Constructivist Classrooms: Lead to standards based classroom for many states.  No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB): Still a controversial issue today

 One can see that America went through numerous changes as time progressed. Many educational philosophers made their mark on society, and their practices are still in use today. Education was impacted by society as well. As technology advanced so did education. Thoughts and practices changed education as well.
