Who Am I?

Mrs. Venetia Lowe We are going to have a wonderful year! I am so excited to have each one of your children in my class.  Jackson State University (B.S), University of Phoenix (M.E.), Piedmont College (Ed.S.)  22 years, 10 at Shiloh, 12 in Dallas ISD (Texas)  Husband (34 yrs), 2 daughters, 2 dogs(Skeeter and Chloe)  Masters - Curriculum and Instruction  Education Specialist - Teacher Leadership  Love BASKETBALL!! The Three R’s... …Respectful, Ready and Responsible Respectful  Be kind to self and others.  Use good manners.  Take care of school property.  Listen courteously to instruction, directions, etc.  Respect personal space.  Listen when others are talking.  Be positive.  Be on time for school/ class.

… Be Responsible  Make good choices.  Take care of yourself.  Help when needed.  Keep up with your books, pencils, jackets, etc.  Complete work on time.  Listen and follow directions.  Resourceful

… Be Ready  Come to class prepared for success.  Have necessary materials (paper, pencil, planner, book, etc.)  Try to solve problems or locate needed information on your own before asking the teacher for help.  Use materials wisely.

Expectations Cafeteria Expectations Students will enter the cafeteria quietly walking in a single file line. Students will walk at all times in the cafeteria. Students will respect the intervals minutes of silence so they can eat their food. Students will talk with quiet voices after time has passed. Students will be respectful of all students and adults in the cafeteria. Students will line up quietly after cleaning their area.

Expectations Hallway Expectations Silent transitions from bell to bell Students will walk in a single file line. Students will keep their hands by their sides or to themselves. Students will walk silently down the hallway. Students will stop at stopping points and wait for their teacher to tell them when to proceed

Expectations Restroom Expectations Students will take care of their personal business without talking or playing. Students will respect the privacy of others. Students will be respectful of the restroom.

Test Retake Policy Students will have the opportunity to retest on test only. It will be given within a week of the score. Requirements will be based on individual needs. Opportunities for students to complete extra- credit assignments in an attempt to raise the students’ overall grade point average.

Shiloh Student Management Plan Shiloh has instituted a 7step behavior plan. This plan will be used for major offenses and repeated minor offenses when classroom consequences have not been effective. If students reach Step 4 on this plan, they will be assigned morning detention. The same consequence will be given for steps 5 and 6. Step 7 will result in an Administrative Referral.

Detention Detention will be Friday mornings at 7:15 am. Students required to serve detention are expected to arrive on time., If they are late, they will not be counted as serving that detention, and another will be assigned. Students that miss 2 detentions will be assigned Saturday detention. If student do not attend any of these detentions, they will have an administrative consequence.

HOMEWORK POLICY Homework takes time to complete. Please provide a nice quiet area equipped with necessary tools for your child to complete his/her homework free of distractions. It is a necessary extension of AKS learned during the school day. All homework assignments will be recorded in the student agendas daily. Please review and sign your child’s agenda nightly. Make sure your child completes or attempts all assignments. If you have questions about the assignments or your child does not understand please make me aware the following day via agenda, , or a phone call. Homework will be given Monday – Thursday and some weekends.

Writer’s Workshop class cultivates young writers in many ways: as creative writers, as editors of their own work, and also as active workshop collaborators. Readers' Workshop class focuses on fostering a love for reading within our students, and to differentiate, or personalize instruction in order to accommodate the learning needs of all students. In addition focusing on essential reading skills. Guided Math Workshop is a differentiated math program. The program contains many types of hands- on activities designed to reinforce difficult concepts through independent, kid-friendly, student centered engagements. Organization is the Key to SUCCESS All work should be in their L.I.O.N. (Learning Involves Organization Now) binder, or designated folders. Agenda books need to be checked and signed nightly. Friday folders will contain important information and the weekly behavior sheets.

Transportation If your child is going home a different way than they normally do, please send a note so I can be sure to send them in the right direction at dismissal. Please encourage your child to give the me the note as soon as they arrive at school to take care of the change without delay in the evenings.

Snacks Healthy snacks are allowed and may be eaten at 2:30 daily, no candy is allowed. Ice cream may be purchased during lunch for the cost of $1.00.

Absences Learning takes places when students have good attendance. We would like to encourage perfect attendance. However, students do become ill and have family emergencies or other situations that may prevent them from coming to school. If your child is absent from school, please send a note of explanation. We cannot excuse an absence without a note from the parents. State law limits the amount of absences children can have. It is also very specific about what excused absences are. Absences will be excused if it is a personal illness, death, or illness in the immediate family, if there is a court order, or for a religious holiday. It is also very important for your child to arrive to school on time each day. If they are not here, then they are missing out on valuable instruction.

Friday Folder Each Friday, your child will take home their red Friday folder. The folder will contain important pieces of information. This may include their classwork for the week (daily assignments and test grades), information from the school such as Title One documents, information from outside sources, and a weekly conduct report. The weekly report will inform you of their behavior and work habits for the week. Review the tests and assignments with your child and sign the weekly report. The folder with the weekly report and graded papers must be returned on Monday.

How can you help your student at home? Sign agenda book nightly Communicate with teacher Keep your child organized Support efforts at school Encourage your child to do his or her best at all times Encourage your child to ask questions if they do not understand Provide a routine and space for homework Limit television time Encourage nightly reading at least 30 minutes Ask questions of what they have learned or are learning in class Attendance to school, tutorial, conferences and school functions Avoid negative comments about your child’s teacher in front of them Know that we want the best for all children. We are in this together and together we can ensure success.
