Lecture topics 1. Computer Uses. 2. Hospital Settings. 3. Clinical Implication. 4. Administration. 5. Education 6. Research.

Computer Uses People use Computers for various purposes: Computers are used in universities for teaching. Computers are used in banks for keeping record of account holders. Computers are used in Railway and Air ticketing. Military & Police also uses computers. Computers keeps track of patients and medical information in healthcare.

Computer in Healthcare If you enter a hospital and look around you will see that you are surrounded by computers, medical devices that included software  applications all over the place: from the entrance where somebody asks for your personal information and fills in a form on a computer, to the rooms where the patients are monitored and some software shows their vital signals on the screen and to the surgery table where very talented doctors performed very difficult surgeries with the help of the medical software.

Hospital Settings In hospital settings, we can find the use of Computers for: 1. Clinical Implication. 2. Administration. 3. Education. 4. Research.

1. Clinical Implication In Clinical Implication we can see the use of computers for: Assessment: Computer helps in gathering and storing the data about the patient.

Vital-signs-monitoring-devices 1. Clinical Implication 2. Patient Monitoring: Computers in acute care settings such as emergency, intensive care are widely used for hemodynamic and vital sign monitoring, calculation of physiological indices . Vital-signs-monitoring-devices

1. Clinical Implication 3. Documentation: Increased accuracy, Legible notes, which decreases reading time and increases accuracy of interpretations.

1. Clinical Implication 4. Telemedicine: Is a rapidly developing application of clinical medicine where medical information is transferred via telephone, Internet or other networks for the purpose of consulting, and sometimes remote medical procedures or examinations.

1. Clinical Implication 5. Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Electronic Medical Records systems have proven to be a far better approach to documentation than paper-based systems.

2. Administration Use of Computers by administrators is to: 1. Define the cost of nursing services. 2. Evaluate quality assurance program. 3. Demonstrate the cost effectiveness of hospitality. 4. Justify roles of each hospital employee.

3. Education 1. Computer-Generated Media: Computers integrate text, graphics, animation, audio, and video communication technologies into a potent method to deliver information. 2. Document Imaging and Image Processing Because medical imaging plays such a major role in disease diagnosis (Oncology), a method to display, analyze, store, and print digitized images becomes important.

3. Education 3. Presentation Devices: Inexpensive projection pads permit projecting the computer image onto a screen eliminating the need for slide film. Animated and audio presentations can be produced for educational and instructional purposes, they can be transmitted to a television or video recorder.

3. Education 4. Scanners: 5. Statistics: Black-and-white or color scanners can convert photographs, line-art drawings into digital form for manipulation, visualization, and storage in the computer. 5. Statistics: Analyses Programs with the ability to display results instantly as charts, tables, etc..

3. Education 6. E- learning: The use of electronic educational technology in learning and teaching. 7. Online quizzes and tutorials: A quiz system useful for online quiz, tests, exams and certifications.

4. Research Preparation of research document: Computers assist in the preparation, revision and formatting of research documents, reducing the time spent on the paper work associated with research.

4. Research 2. Data gathering: Computer assisted interviewing allow the researcher to capture the data immediately in the computer in a usable format.

4. Research 3. Computer assisted instruction: Computer assisted learning occurs when the teaching function of communicating information to a learner is done by a computer system without direct interaction between the student and human instructor.

4. Research 4. Computer assisted interactive video instruction: It is teaching strategy combining video and computer technology. It allows the student to interact with video presentation.

4. Research 5. Simulation: Presents the student with a real life situation on the computer.

4. Research 6. Tutorials: Tutorial approaches involve the presentation of new material to the student. To accomplish learning, information is presented in small steps.
