LAB SAFETY AND RULES College Prep Biology

BE PREPARED  Always wear all safety wear your teacher tells you to wear.  Keep that safety gear on throughout the lab! Especially goggles!

BE NEAT  Keep your area neat and organized  If you spill, ask for help to clean it up right away  TELL THE TEACHER for every accident

BE NEAT  This is important: wash your hands well as soon as you are done!

 You never know what oogies there might be on the equipment you used. Remember that a teenager probably cleaned that last. Ew.

BE CAREFUL  You may be working with glass or sharps, so you want to handle them with care.  Point all sharps away from yourself and others.

WEAR PROPER CLOTHING  Accidents happen, so wear old clothes you won’t mind destroying  People drop things. In order to protect your toes, don’t wear open-toed shoes or sandals

BE CAREFUL WITH CHEMICALS  Always treat chemicals with respect. To be on the safe side, assume all chemicals you handle in the classroom are dangerous and act accordingly.

BE CAREFUL WITH CHEMICALS  If any chemical comes into contact with your skin, wash immediately with water and inform your teacher.

BE CAREFUL WITH CHEMICALS  Never taste a chemical (or anything else for that matter) to figure out what it is

BE CAREFUL WITH CHEMICALS  IF you want to smell something, WAFT it to your face, do NOT suck in a huge lungful. You might die. Or burn your nose hairs off like I once did. True story.

BE CAREFUL WITH CHEMICALS  Always add chemicals to water, not water to chemicals: Whatever splashes up is always what was already in the beaker (do you want that in your eyes?) Diluting acids is VERY exothermic (what does that mean?) so it can shatter glass!

FIND SAFETY EQUIPMENT  Be sure you know where all the safety equipment is located: Fire extinguisher Sharps receptacle First aid kit Emergency exits and route Eye wash station and shower

DO NOT  Eat or drink in the lab  Taste any chemicals or substances you are working with

DO NOT:  Handle broken glass/other sharps with bare hands  Pour chemicals down the drain without permission  Engage in childish actions in the lab

AT THE END OF ALL LABS  Wash your hands with soap and running water  Check out with me BEFORE YOU SIT DOWN so I can be sure the lab area is clean
