History of the Cucumber Has been cultivated for at least 3,000 years in Western Asia The Spaniards, through the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, brought cucumbers to the Americas in 1494 Next to the tomato, cabbage, and onion, the cucumber is the fourth most widely cultivated vegetable in the world

CUCUMBERS Related to watermelons, zucchini, and pumpkins Grow on vines that sprawl along the ground Usually grow to around 9 to 12 inches long and are cylindrical in shape There are two types of cucumbers: slicing cucumbers, which are eaten fresh, and pickling cucumbers
