Learning Goal: Identify safe practices in class activities and labs. 8.1.A demonstrate safe practices during field and laboratory investigations as outlined in the Texas Safety Standards.

Does this Picture Show Safe Lab Practices? Sue’s hair is in the flame; not tied back and she has no goggles. Jim’s drinking from a beaker. Tim’s smashing Ray on the head with a book. Horseplay. Joe’s drinking in class. Not to mention it is a poison. May is dissecting without goggles, an apron or gloves. And…

Does this Picture Show Safe Lab Practices? Sue is going to need a haircut. Duke will have a difficult time seeing. the school nurse is going to be busy with Joe and Ray. this class is out of control. the teacher of this class will be looking for a new job…

Does this Picture Show Safe Lab Practices? Sue’s hair is going to be so uneven. Duke is using direct sunlight to view a specimen under the microscope. The nurse will have to call poison control for Joe and and treat Ray for a possible concussion. Very few students seem to using the lab safely. Who are the few? At least 6 students have been harmed in this picture.

Does this Picture Show Safe Lab Practices? Based on the observations made of this lab, the teacher needs to take the time to review lab safety and expectations so that all of the students can have a safe lab experience. Students who are unable to follow the lab safety rules and expectations will be asked to sit out of the lab activity and possibly be given an alternate assignment.

Safe Practices Quiz When do we wear goggles? When do we make up our own procedures? What are MSDS sheets? What is wafting?...demonstrate. What do we do in case of a chemical spill? What other items are used in case of emergency?
