Chapter 1 – Principles of Government (pp 2-25) 1.1 (pp. 4-10) Government and the State TODAY’S MAJOR STANDARD: A - Evaluate the major arguments advanced for the necessity of government.

Objectives:

 Define Government and basic powers it holds. 1. Government – Institution through which a society makes and enforces public policy (or all the things the govt. decides to do) basic powers are often outlined in a constitution 3. Power can rest with a small group or individual (dictatorship) or with the people (democracy) A - Evaluate the major arguments advanced for the necessity of government.

 Describe the 4 characteristics of the state. 1. State – group of people (population), in a defined area (territory), politically organized (sovereignty) with power to make and enforce laws (Government). 2. We usually refer to these as “nations” or “countries” A - Evaluate the major arguments advanced for the necessity of government.

 Identify 4 theories to explain the origin of states. 1. The four theories are: Force Evolutionary Divine Right Social Contract 2. The U.S. was built using this theory _____________ A - Evaluate the major arguments advanced for the necessity of government.
