Getting Started Chapter 1 Vocabulary

Color Space How color is represented in an image file- typically RGB, CMYK, or Grayscale. RGB – RED, GREE, BLUE CMYK – CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW AND BLACK GRAYSCALE – B&W

Compression Reducing the size of an image file for more efficient storage and use

Image Editing Adjusting and fine tuning an image file.

Image Sensor Light sensitive chip inside a digital camera that reads the light coming into the camera. Photography – writing with light

Megapixel (MP) One million pixels

Pixels Individual colored picture elements that make up a digital image file.

Resolution Pixel count of an image file, describe as pixels per inch (ppi) or (dpi) dots per inch

Digital Capture Taking pictures with a digital camera Light enters the camera through the lens, it strikes an image sensor, which converts the image seen by the camera lens into digital information. A Camera is just a light-tight box

Digital Single Lens Reflex (DLSR) Sophisticated, expensive camera with interchangeable lenses. Can be used on automatic or manual. Very quick Best for results in terms of image control and quality

Point and Shoot Camera A point ans shoot camera is ideal for casual shooting because of its compact size and low price. Usually designed for full automatic use, but some contain manual features

Hybrid Camera A hybrid camera covers the ground between DSLRs and point and shoots. Most have interchangeable lenses and may require and additiaonl accessory viewfinder if you don’t want to compose through he LCD

Medium Format Camera A medium format camera produces an extra better quality results than a point and shoot, but for a higher price.
