Ser vs Estar Spanish

Ser & Estar Have the same meaning! TO BE

To Be I am You are He/She is We are They/You all are

The apple is green. (meaning the apple is not ripe)CONDITION The apple is green. (meaning the color of the apple is green)ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTIC

The apple is green. How is the apple? It is unripe. What color is the apple? It is green.

The apple is green La manzana esta verde. The apple is green (condition=unripe) La manzana es verde. The apple is green (essential characteristic=color green)

Estar Used to show CONDITION. But it is an irregular verb so the standard rules of conjugation does not apply. HOW SOMETHING IS Also used for: emotions thoughts physical conditions location of things

I am yo=I=ESTOY

You are Tu=you=ESTAS

He/She is El/ella= he/she= ESTA

BUT... what about USTED? Since USTED is ALWAYS classified with “el” and “ella” it will get the same conjugation as those, even though... “You (authority) is” does not really make sense it will still be U sted=you(authority)= ESTA

We are Nosotros/Nosotras=we= ESTAMOS

They/You guys are Ellos/ellas/ustedes=they, they, you guys= ESTAN

Bring it all together now 1. YoESTOY 4. Nosotros ESTAMOS 2. TuESTAS 3. el/ella/uste d ESTA 5. ellos/ellas/ ustedes ESTAN

Ser Used to show ESSENTIAL QUALITIES. Ser is also an irregular verb so the standard conjugation rules do not apply. Talking about WHAT SOMETHING IS Also used for: character nationality gender profession physical characteristics
